First "Sakartvelo SOS" Meeting. How Can Eastern Europe Help Georgia Protect Democracy?

On September 26, the first online meeting took place as part of the "Sakartvelo SOS: Eastern Europe Experience for Georgia" project, organized by Daily Humanity in collaboration with the Ukrainian NGO "Insight"
The initiative aims to facilitate experience exchange between journalists and activists from Georgia, Ukraine, and other Eastern European countries, particularly in the context of the parliamentary elections in Georgia scheduled for October 26, 2024.

Protection of Freedoms - A Critical Issue!

Against the backdrop of political instability accompanying the electoral process in Georgia, the protection of democratic freedoms becomes even more crucial. According to Reporters Without Borders, in 2024, Georgia ranked 103rd in the Press Freedom Index, showing a significant deterioration compared to the previous year. This underscores the need for international support and solidarity with the country's civil society, which faces real challenges.

Olena Shevchenko, head of NGO "Insight", emphasized the importance of supporting Georgia in her speech:

"It is crucial for us to do everything we can to help Sakartvelo's civil society withstand and fight for its independence from Russian influence."

Oleksandra Matviichuk, head of the Center for Civil Liberties and 2022 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, shared her experience in creating the "Euromaidan SOS" aid network, which played a vital role in supporting protesters during the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine.

Kateryna Sergatskova, executive director of 2402 Foundation, discussed key security challenges for journalists and activists working in conflict zones, while Olena Shevchenko highlighted potentially high threats to LGBTQ communities and human rights organizations.
