Daily Humanity together with RSF launches free drone-focused HEAT safety trainings for journalists in Ukraine

Daily Humanity (2402 Foundation), in partnership with Reporters Without Borders (RSF), is launching a series of specialized Hostile Environment and First Aid Training (HEAT) sessions focused on drone threats. This program is free of charge and designed for independent journalists, fixers, and freelancers covering the war in Ukraine.

Given the constantly evolving nature of threats on the front line, this training provides vital knowledge and skills for working in drone-threat environments, as well as basic tactical medicine skills.

TRAINING SCHEDULE AND EQUIPMENT PROVISION

Thanks to RSF, all participants will receive an individual tactical first aid kit as a gift. Drone detectors will also be provided, with distribution terms depending on the participant’s primary base of operations:

• Training 1: May 29–31 (Focus: journalists based in Kyiv or the Kyiv region) Drone detectors provided on a temporary loan basis through RSF’s Kyiv Press Freedom Centre.
• Training 2: July 3–5 (Mixed group: 10 participants from Kyiv, 10 from frontline regions) Kyiv-based participants receive detectors on loan; frontline participants receive them as non-returnable aid.
• Training 3: July 24–26 (Focus: frontline journalists) Participants receive a drone detector as non-returnable aid.
• Training 4: August 7–9 (Focus: frontline journalists) Participants receive a drone detector as non-returnable aid.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:

• You must be an independent media professional (freelancer, fixer, or staff member of an independent media outlet).
• You must have confirmed experience of regularly working in conflict zones for at least the past two years (verified through links to published work or editor references).

OUR SELECTION PRIORITIES:

Due to high demand, preference will be given to applicants based on the following criteria:

• Vulnerability level / Role: Fixers > Freelancers > Journalists from small media outlets > Others.
• Residency: Ukrainian citizens > Permanent residents > Foreign journalists on assignment.
• Geography: Journalists residing in frontline regions are prioritized.
• Diversity: We aim to ensure at least 40% female participation.

Note: A maximum of 2 participants from the same media outlet is permitted.
