All Eyes On International Law: Frontline Perspectives + Discussion

Join us for a live discussion with international experts and frontline practitioners exploring whether international humanitarian law can keep pace with the age of unmanned systems—and what needs to change to better protect civilians working in conflict zones.

Modern warfare has outpaced its legal framework. FPV drones and autonomous systems have transformed the battlefield, exposing journalists, humanitarian workers, and investigative teams to new threats. Yet the rules designed to protect frontline civilians were written for a different era, leaving critical gaps in today’s reality.

Discussion topics

  • Why the new generation of drone warfare challenges existing international humanitarian law.
  • How journalists and humanitarian workers are being targeted by FPV and other drone systems while facing legal restrictions on protecting themselves.
  • Whether the international criminal justice system is adapting quickly enough—and what meaningful reform could look like.
  • The tension between humanitarian law and organisations’ duty of care towards people working in the field.
  • What an effective legal and operational framework for civilian protection in the drone era should look like.
