HEMART Training: Supporting Mental Health of Media Professionals in Crisis Conditions

On April 17-18, a HEMART (Hostile Environment Mental Awareness and Resilience Training) took place in Kyiv, aimed at supporting the mental health and enhancing the stress resilience of media professionals working in crisis conditions. The event served as an important platform for developing the skills necessary for journalists, documentarians, and psychologists to effectively work in high-stress environments.

The methodology of the training is unique and was developed within the framework of the Mental Resilience program to provide practical tools for maintaining emotional stability and psychological health in challenging situations.

During the training, participants had the opportunity to learn self-regulation techniques that help maintain emotional stability and manage stress. The program included exercises that facilitated the development of adaptation skills to crisis situations, as well as training in active listening and conflict resolution strategies, which are key in stressful conditions.

Olga Khan, the trainer and Master of Social Psychology, emphasized the importance of self-regulation for working in stressful conditions: “In today’s world, self-awareness and self-regulation skills are extremely important. During the HEMART training, participants can gain practical tools for working in stressful environments, developing interpersonal skills, and maintaining professional resilience. Special attention is paid to self-regulation techniques and burnout prevention.”

Participants also shared their impressions of the training. Viktoriya Pysmenna from the ‘1+1’ TV channel shared her impressions: “Thank you for the useful training on first psychological aid, non-violent communication, and time management. Trainer Olga explained the material clearly and accessibly. I am already applying the non-violent communication techniques in real life — and honestly, it works! There are fewer ‘battles’ at home. The training was rich, lively, with examples and exercises, and time flew by unnoticed. Thank you for the atmosphere, the content, and the comfortable and safe space.”

The HEMART training provided participants with practical tools to maintain psychological resilience and work effectively in stressful situations.
