How to Cover the Toughest Stories: Workshop on Modern Methods in Trauma-Informed Journalism

The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine in partnership with the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma (a project of Columbia Journalism School, New York) offers a unique opportunity for Ukrainian colleagues covering conflicts and tragedies.

A series of three specialized workshops will bring together experienced reporters and experts from the global Dart Center network. They will share knowledge gained through years of work in conflict zones and crisis coverage.

The program covers critical aspects of trauma-informed journalism:

  • Maintaining clarity and purpose during prolonged crisis
  • Sensitive approaches to interviewing victims and witnesses, especially children
  • Strategies for newsroom leaders to prevent emotional burnout
  • Creating materials that honor the memory of the deceased and meet community needs

Participation is free. Language: English, Ukrainian (simultaneous interpretation)

First Workshop “How to Write About the Deceased” will be held on February 6 at 3:00 PM

Reporters face challenges:

  • How to create materials that honorably commemorate those who died?
  • How to document a constant flow of losses while helping communities, especially when the audience is overwhelmed by negative news?

In this session, three journalists from the international Dart Centre network will share practical recommendations based on their experience working with mass casualties. They will discuss how to conduct interviews, choose stories, and create materials with significant societal impact.
