Journalism in Conflicts: Notes from the discussion in Copenhagen

On February 6th in Copenhagen, a remarkable professional discussion focused on journalists’ work in conflict zones. The event, organized by Daily Humanity in collaboration with Dansk Journalistforbund, brought together leading media professionals from Ukraine and Denmark to discuss critical professional challenges in extreme conditions.

The discussion was led by:

  • Kateryna Sergatskova — journalist and security specialist, co-founder of 2402 Foundation (Ukraine) and Daily Humanity, a Ukrainian-Danish organization developing safety culture.
  • Matilde Kimer — DR correspondent for Russia and Ukraine, The Cavling Prize 2022 nominee, Ebbe Munck Award winner.
  • Roman Stepanovych — Ukrainian producer, CEO of Zaborona Media, co-founder of 2402 Foundation, Peabody Award and National Press Club (USA) winner for the documentary series Inside Putin’s Russia.

The central topic of discussion was the physical safety of journalists in conflict zones. Experts shared their strategies for working in dangerous conditions and emphasized the importance of preventive safety measures.

Special attention was paid to maintaining the psychological health of media professionals. Speakers revealed methods for managing professional stress and shared practical advice on preventing emotional burnout.

Participants discussed the transformation of journalistic work in modern conflicts and outlined new challenges media professionals face. The discussion touched upon issues of professional ethics, information reliability, and the role of journalists in conflict coverage.

During the event, experts presented specific tools and techniques for:

  • Risk assessment in conflict zones.
  • Planning safe fieldwork.
  • Dealing with post-traumatic stress.
  • Maintaining professional effectiveness in crisis conditions.
