Public Talk: Insights from the Event on Psychological Resilience of Ukrainian Journalists

2402 Foundation (Daily Humanity), with informational support from UAPP (Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers), hosted a Public Talk dedicated to the psychological resilience of media professionals working under constant stress.

The event took place at the 2402 Foundation space and brought together journalists, producers, and photographers. The discussion focused on how professional stress affects their mental health and what can be done to overcome it.

Key Insights from Speakers:

  • Evgeniy Maloletka, Pulitzer Prize and World Press Photo winner, shared his personal experience of working in combat zones, particularly in Mariupol, and discussed the emotional challenges of the profession.
  • Dr. Lauren Walsh (New York University) presented preliminary findings from her research on the impact of the profession on journalists’ mental health in Ukraine. The final conclusions will be published in March 2025.
  • Oksana Parafeniuk, a photographer for NYT, Washington Post, and Le Monde, discussed the challenges photographers face while working in crisis situations and the impact of difficult stories on their psychological well-being.

Why is this Important?

This Public Talk was part of 2402 Foundation’s systematic work within the Mental Resilience Program — an initiative aimed at developing a healthy media environment in Ukraine. Open conversations about professional stress and emotional challenges help not only to support journalists but also to build a culture of mental health care in media.
